I used 8 of the transparent corrugated boards.

The boards are 20×30. Cut off 10″ from the 30″ long side. This will leave you with a 20″x20″ square. Repeat that 5 times so that you’ll have 5 pieces that are 20×20.

You’ll also have the 10″ pieces that you cut off. From these, you’ll create 5 pieces that are 10″x10″.

You’ll have 3 of the original 20″x30″ pieces left over. You’ll use those to create 5 pieces that are 15″x15″.

In summary, you’ll have:

  • 5 pieces that are 20 by 20,
  • 5 that are 15 by 15, and
  • 5 that are 10 by 10

Place the edges together and secure them with packing tape.

Continue doing this so that you create a square.

Creating the Top

When it comes to the piece for the top, you’ll need to create a hole in the center. You’ll see why soon.

I didn’t worry about making the hole too perfect. I just simply cut a square shape with my razor blade.

And here’s how the box looks now.

Decorate the Box to look like a Present

After that I used red duct tape to further sturdy the box and make it look like ribbon on a Christmas present.

Create the Waterproof Bow

Next, I took some duct tape and cut it into strips that were approximately 20 inches, 18 inches or 16 inches.

I folded these strips over on themselves so that the duct tape shows on both sides.

They’re not perfectly smooth but it’s ok.

Then I twisted them into a ribbon shape and taped them into place that way.

After that, I took six of the longest twists and placed them together in sort of a star shape and stapled them together.

On top of that I added some of the smaller twists until it created a bow that I liked. I stapled those into place as well, and now I had a nice big waterproof bow.

Adding Lights and Putting the Light Up Christmas Decor Together

Now it was time for the fun part, adding some lighting. Heading outside, I plugged the lights in and placed my largest box on top.

Here’s where the hole comes in handy because it allowed me to pull the string of lights through the hole and into the 2nd box

…and from there up into the third box on top.

Now I could add my large waterproof bow to the top of my light up present stack.

They looked really cute but the real magic happened once the sun went down and I turned the lights on…

They looked great and lit up the front of the house in a fun way.

Now, here is where any imperfections in your box making ability will show. You can see I have one edge there that had an undesirable gap that I had to fix– so you’ll want to adjust yours for any imperfections like that one.

I hope you enjoy your light up Christmas Decor!

Merry Christmas!
